Ingredients

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup warm milk
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • 1 cup powdered sugar for glaze
  • 2 tablespoons milk for glaze
  • Red or pink food coloring optional for glaze

Instructions

  • In a small bowl, combine warm milk and yeast. Let stand for 5 minutes until frothy.
  • In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, and salt. Add melted butter, egg, and yeast mixture. Stir until a dough forms.
  • Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise until doubled, about 1 hour.
  • Roll out the dough to 1/2-inch thickness. Cut out heart shapes using a cookie cutter. Place on a parchment-lined tray, cover, and let rise for 20 minutes.
  • Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F. Fry doughnuts in batches for about 1-2 minutes per side until golden. Drain on paper towels.
  • Prepare the glaze by mixing powdered sugar, milk, and food coloring. Dip cooled doughnuts in glaze and let set before serving.

Notes

- Ensure the milk is warm, not hot, to activate the yeast properly.
- Let the dough rise in a warm, draft-free place for best results.
