Description
Conjure up some Halloween spirit with a spooky twist on classic candy apples. These dramatically black and swirling beauties look like they came straight out of a fairytale forbidden forest, but are surprisingly easy and fun to make. Perfect for parties or just getting into the festive spirit!
Ingredients
6 medium apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
2 cups granulated sugar
0.5 cup light corn syrup
0.5 cup water
0.5 teaspoon black gel food coloring
0.25 teaspoon purple gel food coloring
0.5 teaspoon vanilla bean paste
0.5 teaspoon cinnamon extract (optional)
6 candy apple sticks
Instructions
1. Wash apples thoroughly and dip in boiling water for a few seconds to remove wax. Dry completely and insert a candy apple stick into each apple.
2. In a heavy-bottomed saucepan, combine granulated sugar, corn syrup, and water. Stir gently over medium heat until sugar dissolves.
3. Increase heat to medium-high and boil without stirring. Use a candy thermometer to monitor until it reaches 300°F.
4. Remove from heat and quickly stir in black and purple food colorings, vanilla bean paste, and optional cinnamon extract.
5. Tilt the saucepan and dip each apple, swirling to coat evenly. Allow excess to drip back.
6. Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a silicone mat until set (20-30 minutes).
Notes
Ensure apples are dry before dipping to avoid ruining the candy coating.
Use a candy thermometer to reach the 300°F hard-crack stage.
Avoid stirring the mixture while boiling to prevent crystallization.
Handle hot sugar with care; use oven mitts and keep children and pets away.
Store individually wrapped in cellophane at room temperature, avoiding refrigeration.
